PURCELL-HEFFERNAN INFORMATION
My great-grandfather was Richard Purcell married to Johanna Heffernan circa 1890's in Gortnahoe. My grandfather was William (wee Willy) Joseph Purcell and he emigrated in 1929 to New York City. He was a four-time hurling GAA champion here in the Bronx, NY. I have his medals! He marched in 40 consecutive NYC St Patricks' Day parades (has to be a record)! He appeared on the TV show 'Saturday Night Live' in 1980/81 twice as a bagpipe player (they couldn't find anyone else). He is also credited with holding/forming the first NYFD bagpipe band meeting circa 1959. His brothers were Dick, Mick, Jimmy, and sisters Josie and Rose? He managed to make an impact on NYC and all of us over here. Perhaps your web-site/paper could highlight a former local boy sometime. Let me know and I'll send more info.
